Fun is just a hop, skip and jump away with this easy-to-make checkerboard, designed by Ashley Lynn Stock, creator of the blog LittleMissMomma.com. To make one, follow the four easy steps below.

Materials

• 11" x 11" wood plaque with beveled edge (we used Walnut Hollow's Square Pine Plaque #24005, $8.99; WalnutHollow.com)
• Newspaper
• Two 1" paintbrushes
• White and blue acrylic paint (we used Liquitex BASICS acrylic color in Light Blue and Titanium White, $4.99 per tube; Michaels.com for store locations)
• Ruler
• Pencil with eraser
• 1" painter's tape
• 220-grit sandpaper
• Craft sealer (we used Krylon Make It Last Clear Sealer, $6.99; Michaels.com for store locations)
• 12 red and 12 blue buttons
• Small glass jam jar

Instructions

White, Line, Rectangle, Parallel, Square, Black-and-white,

1. Place the wood plaque on a newspaper-covered surface and, using one of the brushes, apply a thin coat of white paint onto the front and sides. Let dry. (Add a second coat if desired.) Find the center of the plaque by measuring across 5 1⁄8" from the top left edge and marking the spot with a pencil. Repeat on all 4 edges. Using the ruler, draw a line to connect the 2 marks lengthwise. Repeat widthwise, forming 4 large squares.

2. From the center point, measure 1 1⁄4" toward the left edge of the board along the horizontal line. Mark the spot with the pencil, then mark 3 more spots in 1 1⁄4" intervals to the left of it. Repeat on the right side of the horizontal line. (You should have 8 marks total.) Do the same to make 8 marks on the vertical line. Use the ruler to draw lines through all marks from edge to edge, creating 64 1 1⁄4" squares with a 1⁄4" border on all 4 edges.

3. To paint the boxes, isolate the first box by covering the top edge, the left edge, the row below and the column to the right with strips of painter's tape. Using the second brush, paint the box blue. Let dry. Repeat on the third, fifth and seventh boxes of that row, repositioning the tape to the right and left to isolate each box. Allow each box to dry before moving onto the next. Using the same process, repeat on the second row, painting the second, fourth, sixth and eighth boxes blue. Continue down each row until every other box is blue. Let dry.

Finger, Wrist, Aqua, Teal, Rectangle, Turquoise, Azure, Thumb, Pattern, Gesture,

4. Give the finished board a distressed look by using sandpaper to lightly sand the painted surface—including the sides. Erase any visible pencil lines. Spray the board with craft sealer according to package directions; let dry. Use the buttons as your playing pieces. Soak the jar in warm water to remove labels and use it to store the pieces.
